Editor's note on series Editor's Note: This is a two-part series on the McMinnville Area Habitat for Humanity. The nonprofit agency's mission is to provide quality housing for low-income people.

Habitat took root in rural Georgia Jimmy Carter and Newt Gingrich were among key early boosters of the now-international program that started in the late 1960s outside rural Americus, Georgia.

Home ownership changes people's lives Families never forget what it meant to them to be chosen by Habitat to become new homeowners, and to help build the houses that become their homes.

Habitat to fulfill family's remote dream Abraham Cabanas didn't plan to remain in the United States when he came up from Mexico City in 1989 to hire out in construction. Neither did Monica Estrada when she came up from Guadalajara to pick grapes in 1994, two baby boys in tow. Now, they are thanking Habitat for Humanity for helping them become homeowners.

Part Two

Volunteers lay the Habitat foundation It's the volunteers who make Habitat for Humanity possible. They give the money, donate the materials and supply the labor.

ReStore undergoes major expansion Forty volunteers help keep Habitat's ReStore up and running as major program fund-raiser.
